Last month, after coming back from holidays, I got a call from my agency saying that I was chosen to be part of a photoshoot for a furniture company - The Furniture Village. There was a couple of things that I adored about this project:
1. I was responsible for my hair and makeup which was a surprise for me!
Normally there's always a makeup artist but this time they asked me to do my own makeup. Something simple, natural and light. The focus was the furniture and not the model and the chosen photos for the campaign were not close ups of me but open shots where you could see the house, the furniture, the decoration and me as a part of a whole and not the protagonist. I actually loved when they asked me to do my makeup up because, although I learn a lot working with makeup artists and some of them became my friends and people I truly admire in the industry and although I am not a makeup expert, I know the products that work for me and I also like to see myself in a certain way and to use my own products and brushes. I remember a photoshoot I did for Martini and the makeup artist was absolutely fantastic. Her name was Elizabeth Rita and she was so cool. She asked me: "How do you like to see yourself, what colors do you normally choose for your makeup?" We talked a little and then she started doing the makeup. I think it was really kind of her to take myself into consideration. Off course, many times you need to stick to what they want, it's their imagination, there's a story to tell and models are there to be a white canvas. But when it comes to corporate or commercial work, something less artistic or editorial maybe, I think models can bring their own input as well.
2. I could leave the house having half of the makeup done.
I don't like to leave the house without makeup! The same way that I don't like to leave the house without brushing my hair. Off course, I don't use makeup to go to the gym or to go to the beach, apart from a lipstick maybe, but for my daily activities, I always take 3 minutes to cover some dark circles and blemishes, a little bronzer to bring some color to my pale skin, a mascara and a blush. It's so quick and simple and it makes me feel like I have my shit together. It's a fake feeling, I know, a placebo. You can call it the makeup placebo effect. I never go crazy on makeup but I like to wear the minimum! Less is more and I like to be reasonable about it. But when you have a photoshoot or a film shoot you have to arrive on set without makeup, which is ok, but I definitely prefer to bring some color to my face. Since they asked me to do my own makeup, I managed to do half of it before living the house.
3. I loved the team I worked with.
Judging by the pictures, you might feel the decoration is very simple and minimalist but every decision, the position of the book, the cup, the sofa, the magazine, every detail took a very long time to find its place. Helen Hill was our stylist and she was responsible for the interior design, working together with Graeme Ainscough, our photographer. When I got home from work I really felt like changing certain things in my place which looks far from the house you see in the picture when it comes to size and when it comes to.... everything else actually!:) But I love my studio. It's small but it took me such a long time to find a place in London that I like and which I don't have to share with anyone else, in a lovely neighborhood at a competitive price. We had to sacrifice the size of it which certainly is not enough to fit not even the sofa you see in the picture but there's other advantages for sure. I remember before moving in, doing an intensive Pinterest research on the topic: decorating ideas for small studio apartments and the more I researched, the more I felt like moving in and the more I felt like being minimal and getting rid of clothes and objects that I didn't really use.
I'll leave you with the pictures from the photoshoot. Some of them were part of the campaign and some others were a gift from the photographer to add to my portfolio. I hope you like the results. And if you need an interior photographer, please take a look at Graeme's work and at his amazing portfolio!
