"When I was a young actor, I used to think that directors were perceptive super - beings who could see through my mask of mock - modesty, my fears, my reticence to know that it was my part - that I'd be wonderful. Now, I know that's rubbish. They only hear what you tell them and see what you show them. They may be wonderful judges of acting talent but they're not mind readers. Unless you've got a great track record, they are not going to risk casting you if you are too frightened to show them what you can do at the audition They are as vulnerable and as insecure as you are.
